Yunnan Minzu University Admission Information for International Students Master's Degree in English Medium Programs

Yunnan Minzu University

Established in 1951, Yunnan Minzu University (YMU) is one of the earliest ethnic higher learning institutions in the People’s Republic of China, and it is a provincial key university co-built by the Ministry of Education, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and the People’s Government of Yunnan Province. After having grown for over 70 years, it has become a comprehensive university with full range of disciplines and distinctive features, including 10 discipline categories namely philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, management, art, and has formed the pattern that equally stresses arts and sciences. Now YMU has more than 30,000 full-time students, of which over 60% are ethnic minorities, besides there are over 600 students from more than 20 countries, and over 1,800 faculty members.

YMU is one of the earliest universities in Yunnan Province to enroll international students , postgraduates for master’s degree and doctoral degree respectively in 1992 and 2013. It also has provided the Chinese language programs for international students since 1981. Now, YMU has established cooperative and exchange relations with over 100 universities and academic institutions around the world, such as Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia , USA, Norway, Japan, South Korea, etc. YMU has received over 100,000 international visitors from over 80 countries, many of which are well-known politicians and scholars. In 2023, YMU is ranked the 130th among the national comprehensive universities, the 2nd among the Chinese ethnic higher learning institutions, and the 4th of the Chinese universities most favored by foreign politicians and the 1st among universities in Yunnan Province.

● Academic and Age Requirements for Admission

1. Applicants for master’s degree programs must hold a Bachelor’s degree or of equivalent level with similar majors with age 18-35 years old.

2. Applicants for English medium programs shall have the ability to accomplish all the Master’s degree courses, professional studies and theses in English. English proficiency certificates include:

◆ IELTS 5.5 or above;

◆ Or TOEFL 70 points or above;

◆ Or English medium instruction certificate of Bachelor study

3. Applicants for Master’s degree of Pharmacy: A Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy or Biology or Chemistry required.

Courses offered:

Ø Elementary courses of language and culture (Panorama of China, Academic English, HSK, etc.)

Ø Compulsory courses (Chemistry of Natural Product，Pharmaceutical English，Medical Ethics，Medical Biostatistics，Basic Theories of Chinese Medicine，Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry etc.)

Ø Selective courses (Strategies and Examples for Medicine Synthesizing, Analysis of Organic Structure, Biotechnological Pharmaceutics, Analysis of Advance Medicine etc.)

Ø Laboratory research and professional practice

Ø Internship in Enterprise

● Requirements for Graduation and Degree

Students will be granted graduation certificate and degree certificate after completing all courses, gaining required credits, meeting the requirements for HSK and English competence, completing the dissertation, passing the dissertation oral defense and the review of the Academic Evaluation Committee of Yunnan Minzu University.

At the time of graduation, the Master’s degree candidates have to reach the following language proficiency levels:

1. Level 3 of Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages or HSK3;

2. Pass Postgraduate Degree English Test of Yunnan Minzu University.
