The Department of English was founded in 1982 by Professor Wang Kun, a renowned English educator in China. It has a history of 40 years. At present, there are 17 Chinese teachers, among whom 4 are professors, 8 associate professors; 5 holding PhD degrees, and 3 doctoral candidates. Ten of the teachers have studied or lectured abroad (USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand). Each on-post teacher undertakes at least one teaching task on English professional course every semester.
In order to expand the students’ international perspective and develop their intercultural communication skills, the Department of English has been actively engaged in hiring international teachers and seeking opportunities for international collaboration. Currently, one American teacher teaches spoken-English-related courses. The Department has invited well-known scholars from home and abroad (such as Professor You Xiaoye of Pennsylvania State University, Professor Icy Lee of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Paul Kei Matsuda of Arizona State University, and Dr. Liu Yijun of Chengchi’s University in Taiwan) to conduct academic exchanges. The Department has provided a Provincial-level Excellent Course "Integrated English." Its teachers’ research primarily focuses on English literature, English education, linguistics, and cultural studies. Some of its teachers have published papers in top international and domestic journals and monographs through internationally acclaimed academic presses such as Routledge. At the present, the members are forging ahead to pursue excellence through action research and teachers’ workshops. They are committed to developing competitive English professionals who have a solid foundation, a global outlook and good communication skills important for language teaching and research in the contemporary world.
